HOW IT STARTED
Genealogy, Canva, and a granddaughter who had other plans
I've always loved genealogy. For years I'd been pulling family photos, documents, and stories into Canva — building family trees, organizing histories, trying to give our family a visual record of where we came from. It was my quiet passion project.
Then my granddaughter Malia started sitting with me. I thought I was teaching her about family history. She thought we were making art. And while I was researching great-grandparents, she was designing unicorns.
She was not wrong to be excited. Her unicorn shirts were genuinely good — bold, joyful, completely her. She called them her 'fashion statements,' and she wore that title with full confidence. But something unexpected happened in those sessions. The combination of my love for family history and her love for design started to become something bigger. Families began reaching out — for memorial programs, reunion booklets, photo blankets. And we realized that what we'd been doing all along — preserving family stories through design — was exactly what people needed.
The unicorns got us here. The family trees showed us why it mattered.
